Lessons about being rejected
We’ve all been there, preparing for an interview, completing the interview and then waiting to hear feedback with eager anticipation. Then those immortal words “I’m sorry, but you’ve not been picked”. We know the feelings of rejection and inadequacy that often follow. This is worsened if you simply don’t hear back at all with no feedback from the interview. IT Graduate Recruitment prides itself on placing the top graduates with the best roles in the IT and Technology market. We want to find all our graduates the career of their dreams. However, we cannot guarantee that every interview will be successful, and if you haven’t got the role for whatever reason, we will explain why. Transparency is key to developing our harmonious relationships with both candidates and clients.
Our job here is to match candidates to the client’s exact needs. These needs will differ with every company, however their requirements often concern:
- Specific qualifications (sometimes at certain institutions)
- Specific grades and results
- Experience and exposure to certain topics
- Personality and Communication skills
- Ability to fit into the company culture
With all this being said, it is hard for graduates to be an exact match for the role, but that's what we aim to do. Even if you meet most if not all of their criteria, you may still not get the role. That’s why we have compiled some top tips on how to deal with rejection and why, strangely, rejection can be a good thing for you.
Experience is invaluable
You cannot put a value on the experience you will gain, you will gain practice at interview, online tests and other forms of assessment. They say practice makes perfect, and the more interviews, the better and more confident you will become. You will build on your skills in communication, including greeting people, talking to people of all levels, and listening.
Value the feedback
Feedback is really useful as it tells you what you need to do to be more successful in interview next time. Remember where perhaps you didn’t answer the question effectively or perhaps you didn’t know the answer at all. Learn from this and practise interview questions so you can confidently answer.
Every closed door opens another
This opportunity may not be for you, and there will be plenty of opportunities around the corner, not always where you expect to find them. We work on lots of roles within the same markets, and that’s not to say that type of role won’t come up again. Moreover, this is an opportunity to explore other options - we can guide you what roles are out there you may also want to pursue.
Focus on the positives
If you know the interview perhaps didn’t go to plan or you stumbled, than don’t beat yourself up about it. Focus on the positives of the interview, namely, you got to the interview stage. Our clients only pick the best graduates for their business, so to be selected from an expansive graduate market, is no small feat.
This is not a race
Everything will fall into place sometime, for some this may mean getting a job after they leave university, for others deciding what they want to do when they’re 50. Life is not a race but a journey and you will gain valuable insights on the way. One thing to do is to take risks, learn from the experience and you will be better for it.
